Minecraft RTX on a Mac: the honest answer, and the nearest thing

There is no Minecraft RTX on a Mac. Minecraft with RTX is a Bedrock Edition feature that Mojang built with NVIDIA for Windows 10; Bedrock Edition is not released for macOS; and the RTX in the name is the NVIDIA GeForce RTX card the feature was launched on, which an Apple Silicon Mac, with Apple's own GPU, does not have. The nearest thing on a Mac is a Java Edition shader that does some of the same work on Apple's hardware. Rockstar Shaders is my Fabric mod for Java Edition 26.3 that traces sun shadows, sky visibility, one-bounce global illumination, water and metal reflections and fog occlusion on Metal, on Apple Silicon Macs. It is version 1.0, and it has been measured on one machine.

I am Ryleigh Newman. I made it because the search you just made has had the same answer for six years and I wanted a different one for the machine I actually play on. Below: what Minecraft RTX is, why it cannot come to a Mac as it stands, what people searching for it usually want, and how close Rockstar Shaders gets, with the limits stated. Facts about Bedrock, Microsoft, NVIDIA and Apple are from their own pages, read on 2026-09-19.

What Minecraft RTX actually is

On 16 April 2020 Mojang opened the Minecraft with RTX beta for Minecraft for Windows 10, the Bedrock Edition. It added path tracing to Bedrock's Render Dragon engine in partnership with NVIDIA, with a GeForce RTX 2060 as the minimum GPU, and shipped a set of creator worlds on the Marketplace to show it off. It reached the full game in Bedrock 1.16.200. Microsoft's creator documentation today lists the requirements as 64-bit Windows, a DirectX ray tracing GPU from the NVIDIA RTX 20 series or AMD Radeon RX 6000 series up, an Intel Core i5 or equivalent and 8 GB of RAM, and it is built around physically based textures, which come from resource packs and Marketplace worlds.

The same documentation now carries a note that ray tracing has largely been superseded by Vibrant Visuals, Bedrock's newer graphics mode, which the wiki lists on Windows, Android, iOS, Xbox and PlayStation. So the thing the search is named after is a Windows-only mode of an edition that is not on the Mac, and Microsoft has moved on from it.

Why it cannot come to a Mac as it stands

Three separate walls. Bedrock Edition's platform list is Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, ChromeOS, iOS, iPadOS and Fire OS; there is no macOS build to add a feature to. The ray tracing is built on DirectX ray tracing, a Windows API, which macOS does not have. And the GPU requirement names NVIDIA and AMD cards, while Apple Silicon Macs use Apple's own GPU, described in Apple's M1 announcement as part of the chip with a unified memory pool.

The official path for a Mac is the one Mojang is on with Java Edition: it moved the renderer from OpenGL to Vulkan in 26.2, saying in February 2026 that keeping Java playable on macOS was one reason, and that Vibrant Visuals for Java is the goal. The wiki says Vibrant Visuals for Java has not appeared in any development version yet. No date has been given, and I will not guess one. That is the honest state of the official route, read on 2026-09-19.

What people searching this usually want

Not the brand. The look: sharp shadows from the sun that move with it, water that mirrors the shore and the clouds, light that bounces off a wall into a room, fog with sun shafts through it, glowstone and lanterns that light the air around them, and a sky that is an atmosphere rather than a gradient. Java shader packs have done versions of all of that for years. What has stood between a Mac and that look is not the idea but the loader: Iris and OptiFine render on OpenGL, Apple deprecated OpenGL in macOS Mojave 10.14, and the Iris project's own driver page lists Apple Silicon as not supported. The Mac shaders overview covers those routes and where they stand.

The nearest thing on a Mac today

Rockstar Shaders is a client-side Fabric mod for Minecraft Java Edition 26.3. It renders on the Vulkan backend Mojang added in 26.2, which on macOS runs through MoltenVK, and because MoltenVK provides no Vulkan ray query extension, its ray tracing runs on Metal: a side-car inside the jar takes the Metal device through VK_EXT_metal_objects and traces the game's own chunk geometry on the same GPU in the same frame. What it traces: the sun, for exact shadows; sky visibility; one bounce of global illumination; reflections for water, metal and ice, one mirror ray per water pixel; and the sky and sun visibility of every fog cell, which is what keeps a cave from looking veiled.

Around those rays is a deferred PBR renderer: four cascaded shadow maps with stained glass tinting the sunlight, GTAO, colored block light in a volume so glowstone and lanterns light the air and the fog, froxel fog with light shafts, an analytic atmosphere with the original square sun and the original blocky clouds, a water engine with a wind-driven wave ladder and a ripple field that carries rings from rain, falls, the player and boats, waving foliage, its own rain and snow, temporal anti-aliasing and AgX grading. An extended horizon draws the terrain you have seen out to 64 chunks, 1,024 blocks. It reads OptiFine-format resource packs natively: connected textures, emissive textures, custom entity models, random entity textures and custom skies.

What the table cannot say: Minecraft with RTX is a finished product from a studio, and Rockstar Shaders is one person's 1.0 release with settings that can move between builds and a few things known to be wrong, such as the first-person player's own shadow, which is wired up and does not appear yet. The comparison page puts it next to the Java packs as well.

The other Java routes on a Mac

Iris with a shader pack is the route most guides give, and on a Mac it comes with Iris's own warning: Apple Silicon not supported, Intel Macs deprecated, because Iris depends on OpenGL. It has a build for 26.3, and packs such as Complementary load on it for some Mac owners and not others. SEUS PTGI, the path-traced Java pack people most often mean when they say RTX, is distributed for OptiFine, and OptiFine has no build for 26.2 or 26.3. The Iris and SEUS PTGI pages take each one on its own. Whichever you pick, it is one renderer per launch: Iris and Rockstar Shaders cannot run together.

What to expect in frames

One machine, an Apple M4 Max with 48 GB, and only at the sizes named. In the sunset bay scene looking down at the water, at 1708x960, the frame took 34.3 to 35.7 ms, up to 28.6 frames a second; at my full 1706x1966 window, 46.0 to 46.5 ms, 21.6 frames a second. The default Render scale of 75% is worth 11 ms at that window size. Turning the ray tracing off makes the frame slower, not faster, because every fallback costs more than the trace it replaces. I have no number for an M1, M2, M3 or plain M4 and I do not promise one. Install covers the jar and the Vulkan prompt, and ray tracing on a Mac explains each ray in more depth.

Questions

Can I get Minecraft RTX on a MacBook?

No. Minecraft with RTX is a Bedrock Edition feature for 64-bit Windows with a DirectX ray tracing GPU, and Bedrock Edition is not released for macOS. The nearest thing is a Java Edition shader; Rockstar Shaders traces sun shadows, GI, reflections and fog on Metal on Apple Silicon Macs.

Is Minecraft Bedrock Edition on Mac?

No. Its platforms are Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, ChromeOS, iOS, iPadOS and Fire OS, per the Minecraft wiki read on 2026-09-19. Java Edition is the Minecraft that runs on macOS.

Is Rockstar Shaders the same as Minecraft RTX?

No. Minecraft RTX is path tracing in Bedrock's engine on Windows. Rockstar Shaders is a Java 26.3 mod with a deferred renderer plus Metal-traced sun shadows, sky visibility, one-bounce GI, reflections for water, metal and ice, and fog occlusion. It is in alpha and has been measured on one M4 Max.

Does Rockstar Shaders need an NVIDIA card?

No, and a Mac cannot use one for this. It runs on Apple Silicon, M1 or later, and traces on Apple's GPU through Metal. Apple says the M3 was the first Mac chip with hardware-accelerated ray tracing; the Metal ray tracing API exists on the M1 and M2 as well. Intel Macs are not supported.

Will Vibrant Visuals come to Java Edition on a Mac?

Mojang says Vibrant Visuals for Java is the goal of its Vulkan switch and that keeping Java on macOS is one reason for it. The Minecraft wiki says it has not appeared in any Java development version as of 2026-09-19. No date has been given, and this page does not guess one.
