The best Minecraft shaders for a Mac in September 2026
By Ryleigh Newman · Published · Updated
The best Minecraft shaders for a Mac in September 2026 depend on which renderer the game is on. On the Vulkan backend, on an Apple Silicon Mac, the pack I know of is Rockstar Shaders, which is mine, is at version 1.0, and has been measured on one machine. On the OpenGL backend, Iris loads the packs everyone knows: Sildur's Vibrant Shaders is the one whose own page names the Mac, Complementary Reimagined and BSL are the most used, and Bliss says Apple support is limited. Iris's own driver page lists Apple Silicon as "Not supported", so every OpenGL pack below comes with that sentence attached.
I made Rockstar Shaders, so read the first entry as the maker's. Every fact about another pack comes from its own Modrinth page or site, read on 2026-09-19, and the order is by how much of the pack its maker promises will survive a Mac.
| Pack | Loader | Backend on a Mac | Newest Minecraft listed | What its page says about Macs | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rockstar Shaders | Its own Fabric mod, pack inside | Vulkan, with Metal ray tracing | 26.3 | Apple Silicon only; tested on one M4 Max | Free, from rockstarshaders.com and GitHub (Modrinth pending) |
| Sildur's Vibrant Shaders | Iris or OptiFine | OpenGL | 26.3 | "compatibility with many systems, like mac and intel gpus" | Free |
| Complementary Reimagined and Unbound | Iris (OptiFine also listed) | OpenGL | 26.3 | Nothing | Free |
| BSL Shaders | OptiFine or Iris | OpenGL | 26.2 | Nothing | Free |
| Bliss | Iris | OpenGL | 26.3 | "limited support due to OpenGL version restrictions" | Free |
| MakeUp Ultra Fast | OptiFine or Iris | OpenGL | 26.2 | Tested on Windows and Linux only | Free |
| Solas | Iris preferred, OptiFine with limits | OpenGL | 26.2 | Nothing | Free |

How I ranked them
Four questions, in this order. Does the pack's own page say anything about Macs, and what. Which loader and backend it needs on a Mac, because Iris and OptiFine mean OpenGL, which Apple's own table caps at 4.1 and which Mojang says will not run at all on macOS in the future. Which Minecraft its newest file is listed for, because the Vulkan option is in 26.2 and 26.3 and OptiFine's builds stop at 26.1.2. And what it costs. I did not rank by screenshots, and I did not time seven packs on my own Mac, because one run on one machine would tell you nothing about yours. The one number I give for my own pack names the machine, the scene and the resolution, and I make no claim that it is faster than any pack below.
1. Rockstar Shaders: Vulkan, Apple Silicon, free
A Fabric mod for Minecraft Java 26.3 with the shader pack inside the jar. It runs on the game's Vulkan backend, MoltenVK on macOS, and does its ray tracing in a native Metal side-car: sun shadows, sky visibility, one-bounce global illumination, water reflections and the fog's sky occlusion, traced on the Mac's own hardware; the record shows that turning any of the three traces off costs more frame time than leaving it on. The water is its own engine, with a wind-driven wave spectrum limited by how much open water surrounds each point and a simulated ripple field. An extended horizon keeps every chunk you have seen on the horizon, 64 chunks out by default. Connected glass and sandstone, Better Grass, dynamic lights, a zoom key and smart leaf culling are built in, and OptiFine pack formats (connected textures, emissive textures, custom entity models, random entities, custom skies) are read with no other mod. There are 82 settings in 11 categories plus an Advanced page.
The terms. It is version 1.0 and the jar is a free download from rockstarshaders.com (Modrinth pending). It has been run on exactly one machine, an Apple M4 Max with 48 GB; an M1 will be slower and nobody has measured by how much. Intel Macs, Windows and Linux are not supported. Settings can move between builds and a few things are known to be wrong, among them the first-person player shadow, which does not appear. The one number: at 1706x1966 on that M4 Max, the sunset bay scene looking down at water measured 46.0 to 46.5 ms a frame on 2026-09-19, about 21.6 frames a second. Compare puts it beside the packs below.
2. Sildur's Vibrant Shaders: the pack that names the Mac
Around since 2012, free on Modrinth, listed for Minecraft 26.3 and for Iris or OptiFine. Its own description is the only one in this list that names the platform: it keeps "compatibility with many systems, like mac and intel gpus", and it says medium or high "should work fine on a GTX 960". It runs on OpenGL through Iris, so Iris's Apple Silicon sentence still applies, but the maker of the pack has at least told you the Mac is a target. It comes in presets, supports Distant Horizons and Voxy, and the same author publishes Enhanced Default and Basic Shaders as separate packs. On OpenGL, wanting a pack whose author expects a Mac, this is the one.
3. Complementary Reimagined and Unbound: the most used, silent on Macs
Complementary is two styles of one pack, Reimagined, a reworked vanilla look, and Unbound, a more realistic one, and the only difference between them is the default settings. It is the most downloaded pack in this list, 66 million for Reimagined and 43 million for Unbound on Modrinth on 2026-09-19, it is listed for Minecraft 26.3, and its installer sets up Iris for you. It offers profiles from Potato to Ultra. Neither its Modrinth pages nor complementary.dev says a word about Macs, so what you have is Iris's sentence and nothing from the pack's maker either way. It started as an edit of BSL in 2019 and has since been rewritten. If you want the pack most people mean by "shaders" and you are on OpenGL, this is it; Complementary on a Mac is the longer version.
4. BSL Shaders
Bright, colorful and distinct, in its author's words: real-time shadows, volumetric light, ambient occlusion, bloom, customisable clouds and water and built-in anti-aliasing, with depth of field, motion blur, specular and normal mapping and cel shading as extras. Free, for OptiFine or Iris, 29 million downloads, and listed for Minecraft up to 26.2 on 2026-09-19, not yet 26.3. Nothing on its page addresses Macs. It is the pack Complementary grew out of, and its install is a loader, the zip in the shaderpacks folder, and the pack chosen under Shaders in Video Settings. BSL on a Mac covers it in full.
5. Bliss: the honest one about Apple
A fantasy-styled pack for Iris, free, listed for Minecraft 26.3 with 14 million downloads. Its requirements section is the plainest statement any pack here makes: "Apple devices have limited support due to OpenGL version restrictions", with a link to the author's own thread. That thread, read on 2026-09-19, says Bliss will not load on Apple devices together with Distant Horizons, that some settings fail to compile on them, and that without Distant Horizons and at default settings it "should work". The author's reason is the one every OpenGL pack shares: Apple's OpenGL support has limits the shader would have to be rewritten around. Fifth because it tells you, and because of what it tells you.
6. MakeUp Ultra Fast, and 7. Solas
MakeUp Ultra Fast is built for the best quality-to-performance ratio: every effect is optional, so you only pay for what you turn on, and it is LGPL-3.0, which none of the other packs are. It is listed for Minecraft up to 26.2 and for OptiFine and Iris, and its "Tested on" list is Nvidia, Intel and AMD on Windows and Linux; a Mac is not on it. Solas is a fantasy-styled pack with colored lighting, listed up to 26.2, with Iris as the preferred loader and a note that on OptiFine custom skyboxes and colored block lighting are not supported. It says nothing about Macs. Both leave you with Iris's sentence, not their own.
The ones left out, and why
Photon says it outright: "NOT compatible with Apple GPUs (Metal)", so it is not on a Mac list. Rethinking Voxels requires Iris, is developed on an AMD card on Linux, and its newest listing on 2026-09-19 was for Minecraft 1.21.10. SEUS, the pack ray tracing in Minecraft is usually named after, is for OptiFine or the legacy GLSL Shaders Mod; its newest downloads are SEUS Renewed 1.0.1 and SEUS PTGI HRR Test 2.1, both from 2020, and Iris's driver page notes that PTGI HRR 2.1 does not work on AMD because of "NVIDIA-isms". Nothing on its site mentions a Mac. Path-traced GI on a Mac is the page for what that search is after.
Which shaders should you choose?
On an Apple Silicon Mac with Minecraft 26.3 on Vulkan: Rockstar Shaders, with its ray tracing, water and horizon, and with the one-machine caveat on every number. On OpenGL through Iris, wanting an author who expects a Mac: Sildur's Vibrant Shaders. On OpenGL, wanting the pack most people use: Complementary, either style. On OpenGL with no Distant Horizons: Bliss, at default settings. Wanting an OptiFine-only pack like SEUS: an older Minecraft, on the older backend, and no Mac statement from anyone. The mechanics of each route are on how to install shaders on a Mac, and why the Mac is the odd platform out is on Minecraft shaders on a Mac.

Questions
What are the best Minecraft shaders for a Mac in 2026?
On Vulkan on an Apple Silicon Mac, Rockstar Shaders, which is mine and at version 1.0. On OpenGL through Iris, Sildur's Vibrant Shaders is the only pack whose own page names the Mac, and Complementary and BSL are the most used. Iris itself lists Apple Silicon as not supported.
Do Iris shader packs work on an M1, M2, M3 or M4 Mac?
Iris's driver page says Apple Silicon is not supported and that drivers have known crash issues with common shaders. Packs still load through it on the OpenGL backend; that sentence is what the Iris team promises when one does not.
Are these shader packs free?
Sildur's, Complementary, BSL, Bliss, MakeUp and Solas are free downloads on Modrinth. Rockstar Shaders is free as well, on Modrinth and on the GitHub releases page.
Which packs need Iris or OptiFine?
All of them except Rockstar Shaders, which is its own Fabric mod with the pack inside the jar. Complementary's installer sets up Iris for you; Bliss and Rethinking Voxels require Iris; Sildur's, BSL, MakeUp and Solas list both loaders.
Why is Photon not on the list?
Its own Modrinth page says it is not compatible with Apple GPUs, in capitals. There is nothing to rank.
Is Rockstar Shaders faster than Complementary or BSL on a Mac?
I do not know, and I do not say so. Every number I have is from one Apple M4 Max, and I have not timed another pack on it. The numbers I do have name the scene and the resolution.
